  • The police are now reporting that a major line of inquiry is a fireworks display next to the motorway causing a major, and sudden blanket of black smoke over the motorway. Not something that could be seen ahead by drivers, but suddenly descending upon them.

  • That particular section of the M5 has speed signs which are changes as the conditions change. Many UK motorways have overhead messaging signs about road conditions etc. Just like in the USA I guess

  • You're right about the M25 but this was the M5 also a busy road, particularly in summer holiday time. But at this time of year a lot quieter than the M25.

  • Lorries here in the uk are fitted with meters which record their speed and time spent driving. Their drivers have very strict rules about both.

  • The death rate on UK motorways is lower than the death rate on similar roads in the USA 2.7 per billion vehicle km. as opposed to 5.2 in USA.

  • See my earlier post. for every 1 billion vehicle miles on motorways in the USA 5.2 deaths, in the UK the rate is 2.7. Think the figures tell the story about who are the safer drivers.

  • Latest news here in the UK is 34 vehicles of which 6 were articulated lorries. 51 injured and 7 known dead but likely to rise as some burnt out cars not yet ascertained whether there were victims in them or not. Thank you to those Americans who have expressed sympathy.

  • Well actually you're wrong. I have now thankfully heard that the people I was concerned about our safe. It was a pure chance that I wasn't there, as Bridgewater is a place I visit often and when my children were young used to attend the carnival.
